Leadership |
Connecting the counseling program to the
academic mission of schools and challenging the status quo.
Forming relationships with students and adults in the school and
community to support all students’ academic success. ~ The
Education Trust ~
Counselor education prepares
counselors for assessment of needs and decision making. The need
for counselors to use these skills to support and improve
student, faculty, administrative, and parent understanding of
their roles and appropriate use of their time is essential for
the team effort in school improvement. Sharing of leadership
opportunities and experiences are expected. |

Communication |
Whether communicating in or out of the school setting,
counselors must understand the roles of the stakeholders in the
education process. Not only is clarification of their own roles
essential, but also clarification of the expectation for
meaningful and
informative sharing of their functions in both program and
student success. Chains of supervision and responsibility will
be discussed. Best practices will be shared. |

Accountability |
“Every counselor must ask and answer a few basic questions: What
am I trying to make happen? How do I do that? Am I effective?
Are there better ways of achieving the same thing? How can I be
counted as part of the total school program?” ~Robert
Myrick~
To
demonstrate their effectiveness School Counselors must embrace
accountability and in so doing will clarify their role and its
viability and relevance within the educational community. |

Organization |
Schools have mandated guidance plans. It is incumbent upon
counselors to identify the activities and tasks included in the
plan and to create vehicles to deliver the services required in
a timely, developmentally appropriate way. Included in the realm
of organization are daily time and resource management and use
and a comprehensive calendar that respects the activities in the
school but creates opportunities for access to students for
program delivery. Ideas that work will be discussed. |

Observation |
Peer
review, peer coaching, and administrator input are recognized
ways to improve professional functioning in school settings for
all of the professional counselors who work as part of the
school team. Counselors should be part of determining what they
need to have observed and evaluated as they deliver the program
and in creating a system to develop skills and talents. Any tool
used must be consistent and relevant to
the counseling staff and include a self-evaluation and an
objective administrative component. ASCA research will be
discussed and methods of counselor evaluation. |
